For one day, Rome became the center of the world, as hundreds of thousands of people — including global leaders — gathered to bid farewell to Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, and a man who forever changed the Catholic Church.
Among the mourners were U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who traveled to Rome to pay their respects.
Before leaving for Rome, Trump stirred controversy with comments about the late pope. When asked to reflect on Pope Francis, Trump said, "He was a fantastic kind of guy," a remark many criticized for being too casual and undignified for such a significant religious figure.
Further fueling backlash, Trump noted that the funeral would offer him a chance to meet world leaders and "talk trade."
Online, reactions were swift and harsh:
-
"My goodness. Please tell me Donald Trump isn't going to try to work trade deals at Pope Francis’s funeral," one person wrote.
-
"Disrespectful," said another.
-
"He should be shunned," commented a third.
However, Trump’s words weren't the only cause for criticism. At the ceremony, after pausing briefly before the Pope's coffin to pay respects, Trump again attracted attention — this time for his choice of attire.
While all other world leaders wore somber black suits, Trump stood out wearing a blue suit.
The contrast was immediately noticed and discussed widely on social media.
Comments flooded online platforms:
-
"Any reason why Donald Trump is in a blue suit and not wearing traditional black for a funeral?" one user wondered.
-
"Trump wore blue to stand out. No class whatsoever," another criticized.
-
"Watching BBC News coverage — everyone is in black except Trump in blue. Unreal," someone wrote.
-
"No respect, just attention-seeking," added another.
Many viewed his appearance as yet another show of poor judgment during what should have been a solemn and respectful occasion.
