Academy Award-nominated actress Barbara Barrie ends her life through medical aid at 95

The entertainment world has lost a beloved actress. Barbara Barrie, the celebrated, Academy Award-nominated performer recognized for her work in Breaking Away and Barney Miller, has passed away at the age of 95. She had previously been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Barbara Barrie’s daughter, Jane Harnick, confirmed her mother’s death to The New York Times on Wednesday, October 28. Barrie died at her home in New York after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Jane revealed that her mother passed away with medical assistance in dying.

Born Barbara Berman on May 31, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, she eventually moved with her family to Corpus Christi, Texas. There, she attended Del Mar College, where she initially studied journalism. However, she soon discovered her passion for acting and chose to pursue a different career.

She later enrolled at the University of Texas, where her acting abilities earned her several drama awards. After completing her studies, Barrie moved to New York to pursue her ambition of becoming an actress—a dream she went on to fulfill in remarkable ways.

Barbara initially focused on theater and never imagined that she would eventually appear in television shows or movies. In a 1963 interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, she recalled, “I weighed 138 pounds, had crooked teeth and a long nose. When I thought of acting, I thought of the stage, nothing else.”

However, Barbara Barrie soon began securing screen roles, launching a career that lasted more than six decades. Throughout her remarkable journey, she received several Emmy Awards, won a Tony Award, and earned an Academy Award nomination.

One of her most unforgettable performances came in the 1979 movie Breaking Away, where she portrayed Evelyn Stoller.

The film received widespread critical acclaim, and Barrie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. She later returned to the same role in the television adaptation.

Her other film appearances included Private Benjamin and Disney’s animated feature Hercules. Television viewers may remember Barbara Barrie most fondly for her role as Elizabeth in the popular series Barney Miller.

In addition to her screen career, Barbara Barrie achieved considerable success on the stage. She appeared on Broadway in the original 1970s production of Company, earning a Tony Award nomination for her performance.

Tragically, Barbara Barrie was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 1994. Following her diagnosis, she became an outspoken advocate for cancer awareness and authored two books detailing her personal experiences with the disease.

Terminal cancer diagnosis
Barrie wanted to help others feel more comfortable discussing cancer and sharing their experiences. During a 1997 interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, she explained why spreading awareness about the illness was so important to her.

“I think if I can get the word out on this thing, that will be my legacy,” she said.

In 2014, Barrie also disclosed that she was living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung condition. She married theater producer Jay Harnick in 1964, and together they welcomed two children, Jane and Aaron, and later became grandparents to three granddaughters. Her husband passed away in 2007.

Rest in peace, Barbara Barrie. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.
